Why Its Important to Be Organized at Work - Walrath Recruiting, Inc. Organizational skills play a big role in how well you work (not a surprise). However, many people lack organizational skills in the workplace. So today we wanted to explain the benefits of being organized at work and give you a few tips on how to do it. Check it out. The Daily Routine The easiest way to understand the benefits of being organized is to look at a daily routine.  An organized employee will approach their daily tasks with a specific method. They’ll have a system to keep track of everything that needs to be completed, which will then enable them to prioritize the most important tasks. When you’re organized it’s easier to complete tasks ahead of time, decreasing the likeliness of missing deadlines or forgetting about a work assignment. Location, Location, Location Not only is being organized by task important, but it also means your work documents all have a specific place. Whether it be physical documents, emails, or even items to help you complete your job like sticky notes, stapler, pens, etc. Understanding where files and other tools are located means that you won’t waste time searching. From a broader perspective, organizational skills are crucial to make an employee a candidate for a promotion. At their most basic, organizational skills enable to do your job more efficiently. If you can prove that you can complete your job effectively, it proves that you can take on larger responsibilities. A successful manager requires leadership skills, but they also need to be able to manage time, employees, workload and deadlines. Why Organization is Important Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant, and author explains why a clean organized environment, improves our ability to think. A study of 80 people at the University of Navarra found that “participants made more mistakes when undertaking a data inputting task in a messy environment than a tidy one”. So not only does it feel good to have a clean space, but it improves your performance. Getting Started The best place to start is by organizing your workspace. Starting with your physical workspace and moving onto your digital workspace. Both are equally important, regardless of whether you do a lot of work on a computer. Having an untidy workspace will bring on stress and make it challenging to work in. Create a filing system for yourself so you dont have papers lying around. This is something you should also do for your virtual documents. Make yourself a folder system, for both documents and emails. Label them and ensure that there are different types of filing. Things that need to be done or have a timeline, important documents, etc. This will require you to consistently check back in them and ensure they are being filtered and updated. If you don’t have a physical workspace or office job, and you are a freelancer, or an artist, or run a business on social media, focus on organizing your apps in your phone. Create folders and have one dedicated to business efficiency. Doing these small tasks will help you stay on top of your work. Next Steps After you’ve organized your space physically, its time to organize the way you work. Different systems work for different people, but the goal is to keep track of your tasks, and then determine what takes priority. There are several methodologies, apps, and devices that serve this purpose. Find what works best and put it to work for you. While these suggestions seem simple, once implemented you’ll begin to notice your mindset change, as well as your efficiency. If youve implemented a new plan, come back in a few weeks and let us how it went. Have some other tips you’ve tried that work for you? Share them below!
